While investments in the latest technologies to improve the attendee experience at the Iowa Events Center have helped it become the region's premier event and convention space, the technology behind the scenes needed an update. 

Specifically, IP Video Surveillance and Access Control Systems—which were installed when the building opened in 2005—needed to be upgraded to keep pace with contemporary technology. The Iowa Events Center turned to Baker Group to modernize its systems and in the process improve the safety and security of one of Iowa's most visible landmarks.

With a focus on effectiveness and efficiency, Baker Group installed Avigilon Access Control and IP Video Surveillance SMS (Security Management System). 

"This fully integrated solution married the access control and IP Video Surveillance system into one functional software platform that allowed the continued use of existing cameras, card readers, electric locks and more," says Doug Ruschill, ‪Project Manager and Team Leader in Baker Group's Technology division. "The flexibility of the Avigilon system has enabled the Iowa Events Center to incorporate additional 360-degree and 180-degree cameras without the recurring software fees commonly charged by similar technology providers." 

The solution was a win-win for the Iowa Events Center as it enabled the continued use of 119 existing cameras while realizing the benefits of the new software. The budget-friendly move will allow the Iowa Events Center to replace legacy cameras as the funds are available.   

"We were conscious of costs throughout this project," Ruschill says. "Avigilon was the perfect solution. Not only were we able to use the cameras they already had, but there are no recurring software fees or costs associated with minor upgrades or updates to the software."
