The world is changing and security is more important than ever – even for the Des Moines Police Department (DMPD). The DMPD, which for 70 or more years used the traditional lock-and-key system, has upgraded its system. It wasn’t until recently that the option to install an advanced security system in a nearly 100-year-old building made of plaster, limestone and marble became cost effective.

In spring 2017, Baker Group’s Security team was awarded the contract to install a comprehensive security system through the DMPD’s four buildings located throughout the city. The new system includes 21 internet protocol (IP) cameras and 161 access control doors connected to a single automation platform.  

Combining technologies minimizes cost.

“We were able to provide exceptional security at the lowest cost by combining hard-wired reporting doors with wireless access doors and IP (internet protocol) cameras,” says Doug Ruschill, Baker Group Project Manager. In addition, should it ever be necessary, the system can be relocated to new facilities.

When installation of the security system is complete in August 2017, the DMPD will be able to track use at nearly every door. “They’ll know the ‘who, where, and when’ on activity at all of their locations,” says Ruschill.

• 33 hard-wired doors capture and communicate card-use data to the server. Hard-wired door controls are expensive because they require running cable through the limestone, down the doorframe and through walls.
• 128 wireless doors require only a simple knob change. “This provides a huge cost benefit to the city,” Ruschill says. Wireless door controls store usage data on the access card until it is used in a hard-wired door, when data is sent to the server.
• 21 IP cameras send and receive data via the DMPD’s computer network or the internet, provide clear viewing at the main police station and its Metro Star Division, and store recorded activity for 30 days.

“As the result of creative wire-channeling and a talented installation crew, the DMPD is gaining a sophisticated, cost-effective and modular security system that can grow as large as needed, as budget allows,” says Ruschill.
