Delta Dental of Iowa desired to relocate its existing services from their Ankeny location to expand into a larger, energy efficient Johnston facility. Baker Group was chosen to provide the Mechanical, Sheet Metal, Temperature Controls and Architectural Sheet Metal work.

Given Delta Dental of Iowa’s goal to be an energy efficient/sustainable organization, Baker Group designed and built one of the most efficient HVAC projects in the area. Working collaboratively with the rest of the design team, Baker Group utilized a geothermal heat pump system and outdoor air heat pump ventilation unit. The geothermal system, combined with increased glass efficiencies to reduce the heating and cooling load, means that the new Delta Dental of Iowa building will use over 40% less energy than the ASHRAE baseline. Baker Group also provided a web-accessible DDC control system to assist the end user in achieving long-term management and energy goals.

Baker Group was asked to build an efficient geothermal system that was integrated into a building with a large amount of exposed ceiling areas. This required a high level of coordination and pre-planning with all members of the design team. The fast-track schedule required a geothermal design and installation prior to the winter of 2009/2010.
