Baker Group worked with Client B to add additional redundant cooling and electrical systems to their data center. Baker Group successfully maintained a fully functional cooled data center while replacing the entire mechanical systems within the existing data center which located in the Founders building at Client B’s campus in Des Moines, Iowa.

This project included removal and replacement of two existing 100-ton chillers with two 200-ton McQuay Turbocore water-cooled chillers and two new Evapco cooling towers, installation of new chiller plant with chillers, cooling towers, remote sumps, pumps, fuel systems for generator, and associated piping. In addition to providing piping modifications to provide redundant cooling systems for the data center spaces, the system replacement took place in a fully functional mechanical plant with no system outages affecting the building or the data center spaces.

Additionally, the data center was fed with new redundant chilled water feeds as well as a bi-directional underfloor chilled water system in a 10” raised floor space. Six (6) CRAC units were replaced in the data center, as well as a rearrangement of the other existing CRAC units into a hot aisle/cold aisle orientation.

As part of the electrical upgrades to the project, a second utility feed was brought in, new UPS systems, dual power feeding of all CRACs, and the addition of a new 2,000 KW generator was installed. Once again, there were no unplanned outages associated with this project

The completed data center now consists of new 4” bi-directional chilled water piping loop as well as new CRAC units and iCom controls. Final system design now allows for up to a 100W/SF IT load.
