Construction of this 72,000 sq. ft. outpatient facility was completed in 2015.  Baker Group was chosen to provide mechanical, sheet metal, building automation, access control, CCTV and fire alarm systems.

The mechanical systems included one large roof top air-handling unit for the general spaces in the hospital, a separate roof top air-handling unit for the front atrium area and a dedicated air-handling unit for the operating room (OR) suite.  The unit for the OR area incorporated electric steam generators to maintain humidity control.  An energy recovery unit was also integrated into the system. To improve energy efficiency. The central plant consists of high efficient hot water heating system and a centrifugal chilled water system with a remote cooling tower.  Heating was provided by hot water throughout the facility.  10,000 sq. ft. of snowmelt was installed at the drive-up canopies at both main entrances to improve winter safety.

Baker Group installed all the medical gas piping and equipment to support the supply of oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, vac, CO2 and medical air to patients.  Baker Group’s scope also included piping to all sterilizers, cart wash, MRI and CT scanner.

Baker Group was also chosen to provide the building automation system, access control, CCTV and fire alarm systems through a separate RFP process.  Baker Group worked closely with our mechanical and sheet metal teams coordinating the scope of work for the automation system.  This process was very collaborative with the team of contractors as well as the Owner.

The automation system controls all the mechanical systems within the hospital with unique system controls unique to healthcare such as:

  • Within the MRI area monitoring oxygen levels within the space and controlling a separate exhaust system.
  • Active positive pressure control within the OR’s with respect to the corridors by modulating the airflow of the supply and exhaust VAV boxes.  Monitoring the room pressure locally with a local alarm and display of the pressures.
  • Providing OR temperature and humidity reports in compliance with State Medical and Joint Commission regulations.
  • Controlling and providing local pressure and alarming for endoscopy rooms and the isolation room.
  • Controlling backup heating for the OR rooftop air-handling unit.
  • Actively controlling building pressure by means of air flow tracking.

Both security access control and CCTV systems were manufactured by Avigilon and provide IP cameras and WEB based access control. There are 25 IP cameras ranging from 2 to 5 megapixels coming back to four different POE switches located throughout the facility. Video management and recording is accomplished with a 5 TB NVR located on-site with remote access and viewing from their downtown facility. There are approximately 40 doors of card access with both multi-class card readers and combination on-line lock/readers. Local control is provided by Mercury controllers at four different locations all networked to the Avigilon access control appliance. Both systems are capable of expansion as the facilities needs grow.

The fire alarm system equipment was supplied and commissioned by Baker Group. The fire alarm equipment provided was manufactured by Gamewell-FCI and included their new S3 addressable fire alarm control panel with approximately 45 addressable modules, 122 addressable sensors and 150 notification devices. The system included 3 auxiliary notification appliance power supplies, digital alarm communicator and remote annunciator with LCD touch screen. The system provides monitoring of the building fire suppression systems, partial smoke and heat detection, and elevator recall functions.

For complete Mechanical, Automation, Security and Life Safety, Central Iowa Healthcare chose Baker Group.
