There are many mechanical contractors in Central Iowa, but Baker Group is among a few holding American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) certifications. Among the diverse mechanical engineering skills required to attain these certifications is advanced welding expertise.

“These certifications give us the capability to work on systems and piping of high temperature or pressure – and they assure our clients of the best possible quality and safety,” says Jordan Lint, a Project Manager in Baker Group’s Mechanical business unit. “For example, we do work in biodiesel, food-grade process piping, research and development, and laboratories.”  

Baker Group’s ASME certifications, or stamps, include:

ASME Certification “S” stamp: Allows the fabrication of boiler parts and power piping.
ASME Certification “U” stamp: Allows the fabrication of pressure vessels and tanks.
National Board “R” stamp: Required to make repairs or alterations to existing ASME code-stamped pressure vessels, boilers and piping.

Lint adds, “There are so many things that go into achieving ASME certifications. They’re really about having a quality control program throughout our design, procurement, fabrication and welding processes.

“A big part of this is having welders who understand the various materials we use and what’s involved in setting up weld procedures and inspections,” he says. Baker Group works with carbon, stainless steel, titanium, nickel alloy and chrome moly. Each metal and metal alloy responds to heat differently and is manipulated differently and, therefore, requires specific skills.

“Having these ASME certifications is part of Baker Group’s being a truly comprehensive mechanical contractor,” Lint adds.
