Are Air Compressors Robbing Your Plant’s Profitability?

Are Air Compressors Robbing Your Plant’s Profitability?
10.26.2017

In manufacturing facilities, compressed air is as important as water, gas and electricity. If an air compressor system goes down, so does production. Further, dysfunctional systems require more energy – and money. Like all Baker Group products and services, our Compressed Air Energy Audits are designed to enhance overall value for our clients by facilitating:

  • Lower energy and maintenance costs
  • Improved facility productivity
  • Greater production uptime
  • Lower capital spending

Russ Morine, Compressed Air Systems Evaluation Specialist at Baker Group, has spent his career performing compressed air energy audits for companies throughout the U.S. He says, “Virtually every industrial company uses compressed air in their operation, and roughly 75 percent of their compressed air systems aren’t working at peak efficiency. Something needs to be fixed.”

Evaluating reliability and efficiency
Compressed air energy audits take a detailed look at both the supply and demand sides of compressed air systems:

On the air supply side (compressor), “Many systems supply too much PSI, which is unnecessary and can be very costly,” Morine says. Air compressor energy audits analyze Kwh consumption, malfunctions, improper control issues, equipment misapplications, pressure issues and more.

On the demand side, audits evaluate consumption inefficiencies, equipment misapplications, leaks and other dysfunctions, and design-related issues. “Controlling demand is one of the most important parts of the system, and there are usually lots of opportunities for improvement,” Morine says.

Improvements provide rapid payback
After the audit is complete, Baker Group reviews its findings with the facility owner or manager, offers recommendations and calculates the potential savings of making those improvements.

“Compressed air efficiency audits typically provide a very reasonable and often rapid return in investment,” Morine adds. “Alliant Energy will help their customers by funding compressed air studies. For example, Alliant’s Custom Rebate program encourages and rewards customers who implement energy-saving compressed air improvements.”
