Do You Need a Space Heater Policy?

Do You Need a Space Heater Policy?
11.10.2016

Tucked under desks, near clothing or other combustibles, space heaters present a significant risk of fire or injury to property and employees. In fact, based on 2009-2013 averages, the National Fire Protection Association reports that space heaters were responsible for 40 percent of home heating fires and 84 percent of home heating fire deaths.

Businesses are also susceptible to fires from space heaters. If you choose to allow space heaters at the workplace, it’s important to comply with OSHA’s rules for electrical equipment and have a policy in place for space heater use.

If you do not currently have a space heater policy, here are some tips for establishing one:

  • Use all electrical equipment according to the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions, per OSHA regulations.
  • Require employees to get supervisor approval before bringing space heaters to work.
  • Make sure units are labeled by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and have automatic shut-off features and heating element guards. Inspect annually to make sure they are adjusted and clean.
  • Require at least 36 inches of clearance around each unit; do not use in areas where there are easily ignited/combustible materials (trash, paper, clothing, etc.) or flammable liquids.
  • Do not allow in high-traffic areas where they can be a tripping hazard, or anywhere near sinks or other water sources.
  • Make sure the unit’s cords and plugs are not frayed or damaged. Be sure space heaters are always plugged directly into wall outlet; using extension cords or power strips can cause overheating and lead to a fire.
  • Instruct employees to always turn space heaters off when not in use or unattended, and to unplug them at the end of each day.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher near every portable heater.

The best way to alleviate concerns about space heater safety is to avoid having them in the first place. A well-designed, installed and maintained HVAC system will help maintain a constant temperature and reduce the need for space heaters during cooler months.
